Ph.D. ENTRANCE TEST (JAN-FEB 2011) University of Mumbai

The University of Mumbai invites application for the Ph.D. Entrance Test (PET) of the Jan-Feb Session in the concerned subject of research under the Faculty of Arts, Commerce, Science, Law and Technology.

* Date and Time of Ph. D. Entrance Test:- Saturday, 26th February, 2011 at 11:00 am to 02:00 pm.
* Starting Date for acceptance of Application Form:- 27th January, 2011
* Last Date for acceptance of Application Form:-16th February, 2011 up to 05:00 pm.
* Eligibility:- As per the Ordinances O.5473, O.5474, O.5476 of the University of Mumbai as mentioned in the VCD. No. Exam./Thesis/Univ. /VCD/2414 of 2010 (Refer Annexure - I for VCD & Annexure - II for UG-441 0f 2005 Circular)
* Registration fees along with Application Form: - A Demand draft in the name of �Finance & Accounts Officer, University of Mumbai� of Rs. 1000/- for General Category and Rs. 500/- for Reserved Category as mention in VCD.

� Syllabus for the Entrance Test:- Topics included in the compulsory / core papers at Post Graduate Degree level programmes in the respective Research Subject of the University of Mumbai. (refer Annexure - III for the list of Research Subjects )

� Exemption from test:- As mention in clause No. 9 of said VCD (Refer Annexure - I for VCD) The Exempted Candidates shall submit their application on or before 10th March, 2011 to the directly to the concerned research centre as per clause No. 11.1(a). (In case of any doubt candidate may contact to Thesis Section)



The details of subject wise vacancy position of Ph. D. seats along with the Recognized Research Center and guiding teachers are shown in the Annexure - IV. However, the number of vacancy may change due to transfer of guiding teacher from one institution to another institute (Refer Annexure - IV for details)

The candidates can download the Application Form for the said Entrance Test from the University website and submit it along with the attested photocopies of previous Educational Qualification and work experience certificates (if any) at Room No. 129, First Floor, Thesis Section, Fort Campus of the University on or before 16th February, 2011 up to 05:00 pm. (refer Annexure - V for Application Form)

The Pre Ph.D. course work is mandatory, except for those who have been granted exemption as per U.G.C. rules and regulations which are mentioned in the VCD. No. Exam. /Thesis/Univ. /VCD/2414 of 2010 dated 18th November, 2010.

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

It is a computer-adaptive test that is available year-round at test centers throughout the world. The GMAT measures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writing skills that are developed over a long period of time. It is specifically designed to help graduate schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in business and management. GMAT scores are used by nearly 1,700 graduate management programs throughout the world, and more than 1,000 of these programs require GMAT scores from each applicant. Your GMAT scores are only one predictor of academic performance in the first year of graduate management school. To find out how your GMAT scores will be factored into the application review process, you should contact the admissions office at the school(s) to which you are applying. The GMAT does not presuppose any specific knowledge of business or other specific content areas, nor does it measure achievement in any particular subject areas. The test does not measure subjective factors important to academic and career success such as motivation, creativity, interpersonal skills, study skills, or overall success on the job. Test takers should note that the GMAT is entirely in English and that all instructions are provided in English.

What Is a Computer Adaptive Test ?
In a computer-adaptive test (CAT), questions are selected while each individual takes the test. At the start of each multiple-choice section of the GMAT, you are presented a question of middle difficulty. As you answer each question, the computer scores that question and uses that information as well as your responses to any preceding questions and information about the test designed to determine which question to present next.

As long as you respond correctly to each question, questions of increased difficulty typically will be presented. When you enter incorrect responses, the computer typically will present you with questions of lesser difficulty. Your next question will be the one that best reflects both your previous performance and the requirements of the test design. This means that different test takers will be given different questions. The selection of ques-tions you will see is based on your responses to all previous questions, and because the CAT adjusts to your individual ability level, you will get few questions that are either too easy or too difficult for you.

Because the computer scores each question before selecting the next one, you must answer each question when it is presented. For this reason, once you answer a question and move on to another, you cannot go back and change your answer. The computer has already incorporated both your answer and the requirements of the test design into its selection of your next question.

Common Entrance Test (CET)

A Common Entrance Test (CET) is conducted by the Competent Authority so designated by the Government of Maharashtra for admission to 2-yrs full time MBA/MM Programmer in all Management Colleges/Institutions including University Departments in Maharashtra State.

The entrance test for the two-year full-time Master of Management Studies (MMS)/ Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes conducted by more than 75 institutes affiliated to nine Universities in the state of Maharashtra, including the Universities of Mumbai and Pune.

Eligibility Requirements : The eligibility criteria for CET (Common Entrance Test for all the Institutes offering management courses in Maharashtra) is a second class Bachelor's Degree or equivalent with a minimum 45% marks (40% for SC/ST candidates). In all cases candidates appearing for their Degree exams in the current academic year are eligible to appear for the entrance tests.

Common Admission Test (CAT) for Indian Institutes Of Management (IIM)

A Common Admission Test (CAT) is held every year generally in the month of December for admission to the Post-Graduate Programme (PGP) of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozikode and Lucknow

The particulars of the examination are generally published in the Employment News in the month of August. Bulletin, containing details of the programmes, CAT and Programme, Application Forms can be obtained from the main Branches of State Bank of India on payment of requisite amount. The last date for submission of applications is usually 2nd week of October.

Eligibility Requirements : A Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in any discipline recognized by the Association of Indian Universities with minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% for SC/ST candidates) and (Minimum of 50% aggregate marks [45% for SC/ST candidates]) in any of the Secondary/ Higher Secondary examinations (or equivalent) held by a Board/ University.

Reservation : 15% and 7.5% of the seats are reserved for candidates belonging to SC and ST communities respectively, who satisfy the admission requirement.

Selection : Admission is made on the basis of Common Admission Test (CAT) to be held at various centers, Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

Test Subjects : Test consists of 4 subjects

• Reading Comprehension
• Logical Reasoning

Things to remember :

• The question Paper will contain OBJECTIVE TYPE questions.
• 1/4 negative mark for every wrong answer.
• Only those candidates, who secure sufficiently high marks, will be called for Group Discussion and Interview.
• The level of difficulty of the tests has not been the same every year.
• The number of questions keep changing.
• The pattern of the test has also changed very frequently.
